“I know where you’re at, because I’ve been there, too. Imagining complex clothes I’d like to make, but not knowing where to even start. Admiring more experienced patternmakers’ works on social media, wondering how they drafted their intricate designs.
I’ve been drafting patterns since 2012, constantly learning new techniques from different resources: taken classes both online and offline, participated in various workshops, watched a ton of videos on YouTube, hoarded books…you name it!
As a patternmaker, I’ve always been curious to discover how to achieve different shapes and interesting textures. I consider patternmaking as a form of art. It’s fascinating to see the flat 2D pieces take a 3D form when you sew them together.
I love fabric manipulation, because it’s an excellent way to add depth and interesting details to the clothes you’re making.”

This course will teach you step-by-step how to construct different textures and apply them to your garment patterns, so that you can create clothes with that extra little something that makes them stand out.
⚪The various techniques will be explained step-by-step. You will learn how to draft the pattern and how to sew the piece.
⚪The first 3 modules are dedicated for learning the different fabric manipulation techniques by making samples.
⚪Module 4 will explain how you can apply these techniques to garment patterns with practical examples. You’ll get half scale basic patterns to print and experiment on.
You will get illustrated instructions in a PDF format that accompany the video content.
Here are a few makes of mine where I have applied Fabric Manipulation techniques I teach in this course. Just to give you an idea.
Who is this course for? It’s for anybody who loves to sew and has the patience for intricate and time-consuming projects, too. I recommend that you know at least the basics of sewing as this course doesn’t cover the basics. For the garment projects, it will also be helpful if you understand patterns.
I don’t make clothes. Will this be useful to me? You can apply the same techniques also to accessories, such as totes, and home decor.
What are the payment methods? You can use credit cards or PayPal on desktop. Depending on your bank, you might also be able to use a debit card. In addition, on mobile, there’s Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Why is the final price higher than the one shown initially? Are you located in Europe? Unfortunately, there’s an EU and UK VAT that has to be paid on digital products. The percentage depends on your country. You can find more information here if you’re interested. Etsy shows the prices with VAT included. The same goes for Australian customers; the GST will be added to the price.
What happens after I enroll? You will get access to the contents right away. Just click on the “view content” button on the purchase receipt, which will be emailed to the address you provided.
How long will it take me to finish the course? It’s completely up to you, but most likely at least a month if you have a lot of time to dedicate for it. This course is self-paced. I have included a suggested 3-month study plan that you can follow if you want. Some exercises are more time-consuming than others. You could also choose to keep this course as a reference library and only watch the videos that you need.
How long will I have access to the lessons? For the lifetime of the course. Should I ever decide to remove it, I will let you know in advance. This would be due to external factors; I don’t have intentions of removing it.
Can I download the videos? No, they are available in streaming mode only, so you’ll need access to the internet while watching.
What materials and tools will I need? You will need a pencil, ruler (with the possibility to draw right angles), compass, pattern paper, scissors, tape or glue, sewing machine, thread, pins, and an iron. For the exercises, I recommend using cotton.
Do I need to know patternmaking? You don’t need to know patternmaking to make the samples, and I will provide you with half-scale basic patterns for Module 4. However, if you want to make full-scale garment patterns, you will need to either draft them yourself or use commercial patterns as a base. I have free instructions at my blog.
What if I have questions? You can email me at info(a)theshapesoffabric.com at any time.
Will I get a certificate? If you complete the homework and submit the pictures you will get a certificate of completion.
Can I enroll at another time? This course won’t be open for enrollment after the cart closes but it will make a comeback in the autumn. However, the price will be slightly higher.
