This patternmaking guide will teach you how to draft winter coat patterns using a modified dartless bodice block as a base. It comes with instructions for both a basic sleeve and a two-piece sleeve.
The four coat designs that are included all have different collar, pocket, slit, and sleeve details that you can mix and match to create more styles:
There’s a flared coat with a shawl collar and side panels, a classic long winter coat with large patch pockets and a high back slit, a double-breasted cropped coat with an extra large, notched collar, and a coat with sculptural, paneled sleeves.
You’ll learn how to draft a lining pattern for each coat. However, you can also make the coats without one if you choose.
Ideal fabrics for these coats are medium to heavy-weight wools (boiled, tweed, bouclé, twill). However, depending on the style and season, you could also try materials such as denim and cotton twill or venture into using faux fur!
This Patternmaking Guide is classified as “Advanced” in difficulty. It’s suitable for people who are already familiar with patternmaking and have drafted, for example, the basic bodice pattern before. It’s a challenge to draft and sew coats.
