The Palmu Blouse is based on one of my Instagram pattern experiments. I enjoy shattering a pattern into a myriad of separate pieces that I then sew back together, creating an interesting texture. In this case, there’s a spiked texture that covers the raglan sleeves completely.
Palmu is my native Finnish word that means palm tree. The texture kind of reminds me of a palm tree trunk. But you could also think of wings or dragon scales.
The blouse is loose-fit and has a raglan cut. It’s designed for compact, midweight knit fabrics, such as Ponte Roma or scuba. However, you can also use wovens if you prefer.

You’ll first turn a dartless bodice block into a raglan pattern and then proceed to add the spikes to the sleeves. There will be a lot of pattern pieces and a lot of seams to sew. The end result is definitely worth the effort, and you’ll have a unique and stunning blouse that is sure to turn heads.
The basic design has the spikes pointing upward. You can also draft them downward or into a zig-zag pattern. The blouse can be turned into a dress, and you can customize the sleeve length to your preference.
